Denim Jacket: American Eagle (ancient!) Dress: H&M Booties: Target Earrings: Trunk 13

One of my absolute favorite and most hated parts about living in the south is the weather. It can go from 40 and freezing to 72 and beach ready all in one week, which makes picking out what to wear on any given day a complete nightmare.

I have come to find that dressing for this schizophrenic weather comes down to having a few key pieces, easy for layering, that you can easily mix all year round.

Easy breezy dresses. Can be winter ready with a good jacket and a pair of tights or with flip flops and a giant pair of sunnies for a warmer day.

Denim jacket. A staple for the southern girl in my opinion. And once you find the perfect one, it will literally stay with you for many many years. I believe this one is from my freshman year of high school! (thanks American Eagle)

Lightweight scarves. Giant ones that can be looser or tight around your neck for the most warmth. Scarves are an easy way to accessorize without putting a whole lot of effort.

A good pair of jeans. A given.

The perfect racer back tank. For layering in cooler temps, or to throw on over your suit for a quick trip to the beach. And if you're anything like me, when you find this perfect tank, you literally buy it in every color.

What are some of your wardrobe staples?

Top: The Girl That Loves Skirt: Trunk 13 Shoes: Nine West Necklace: Trunk 13 Sunnies: ASOS

Have y'all ever had that moment where you force yourself get out of your fashion comfort zone, try something you quite frankly don't feel like you can pull off and then get the woah that doesn't look half bad look when you see your reflection?

Welcome to Emily's world when it comes to the crop top.

Now we all know these teeny tiny bits of material that mostly look more like they would fit a toddler than a chick who is definitely not flat as a board in the chest area are intimidating. Not too many things scare me when it comes to clothes, but color me terrified. However, trying this adorbs little top from The Girl That Loves has changed my life, and my current need to go to Urban and raid their 70% off sale section. Seriously, it's like a crop top heaven in there right now. Paired with a high waisted, fitted bottom the crop isn't looking half bad. Some shape is happening and I don't look like a giant, yet shrunken tent. This was the image that I always associated with this trend.

What are your fashion demons that haunt you in the night? Let's remedy them ladies. Trust me, it's not half bad. And your closet will certainly thank you for the addition. I know mine has.

Side note....The Girl That Loves is having a HUGE sale! 40% off some of my favorite pieces! Check it out today!!

Spotted: the world's most perfect bauble

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Plaid: Trunk 13 Leather top: Trunk 13 Jeans: Old Navy Heels: Nine West (ancient & need to be replaced) Necklace: BaubleBar Lips: BITE

To call this bauble simply a necklace would be completely and utterly insane. It is so much more than that, it's an outfit maker, standout piece and total conversation starter. The first time I wore this stunner out, surprisingly I had more compliments from guys than girls. I think they were more curious as to why in the world a girl would wear a necklace that looks like it weighs the same as a small child, than the fact that it was fashion accessory gold, but hey got them talking. Side note, while it is not light by any means, it isn't all that bad. However, it is definitely not for the bauble scared.

The Courtney Bib, most accurately named after the lady who made me have-to-have this giant piece, the Courtney Kerr, is back up on BaubleBar as of yesterday for preorder to be shipped at the end of February. Run, jump or fly to your nearest computer or phone and get yours TODAY before they are gone. I'm telling you, you won't be sorry.

On to the rest of the outfit. I have always been a fan of leather, owning leather pants, jackets, bags of all sizes and shoes in multiple quantities. Whenever I first started my holiday job at Trunk 13, a local boutique in Savannah, this shirt made me go ga-ga. And as the only one left it was quite literally fashion fate. Working at the boutique was exactly like living in your dream closet every single day. Playing dress-up with amazing clothes and accessories. I don't know about you but that is my idea of fashion heaven. Mixing the red lip with the oversized plaid shirt and the neutral leopard shoe make for a rather effortless, but still put together look. Chic.

Another way to wear a super structured top like this one is with a slightly high waisted flowy maxi in a bright cobalt blue for example, or a cute midi. Keeping the bottom more voluminous will definitely counter the super structure of the leather top. I can't wait to wear mine into the spring.

Button down: Forever 21 Skirt: H&M Fur: H&M Booties: H&M Watch: Marc Jacobs Sunnies: Guess

In honor of everyone starting back school this week I figured I would give you a little lesson. I know it is hard to imagine a world without Instagram....how did we live without a dozen different filters to be able to make a not-so-fab pic look model worthy is beyond me!

The Brownie camera introduced the concept of the snapshot. It was introduced in 1900, as a cheap and easy way to capture a moment. The photos come out as a 4x4, which is why it is the original Instagram. The app even looks like the teeny tiny camera!

As for the look, I love a good chambray shirt, and this one from Forever 21 is beyond ancient but I just can't seem to let it go. It reminds me of a painters shirt, with its oversized nature and huge front pocket. I just can't deal. And what girl doesn't love a little bit of fur?!
